Intercontinental Internet CableBy now, any news junkie is probably aware there was a mysterious set of events that all but brought Internet access in some countries to a halt. You can breathe a sigh of relief if you live in North America, Australia, UK, Israel, Iraq and most English speaking countries you are untouched. The brunt of the virtual shutdown slowed Internet access in large areas of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan and India. Many of these countries were able to redirect their Internet traffic through alternative routes.

Although one country is publicly announcing they are having no problems and “everything is fine”, 3rd party reports show quite a different story. The Iranian embassy in Abu Dhabi told ArabianBusiness.com that “everything is fine”, but Internet connectivity reports on the web, citing a router in Tehran, appear to indicate that there is currently no connection to the outside world. You can view the 3rd party Internet traffic report here for Iran, Asia and the world.

While conspiracy theories are spinning around the Internet that this is a planned strike by Israel and the US to break Iran off from the world, we’re not looking to get into that mess. Iran FlagWhat is very interesting to take a close look at is how closely our world is tied to the Internet for our business and personal lives. Financial transactions from bank transfers to stock trades are transmitted through these intercontinental cables connecting our countries.

Most of the countries effected by the most recent Internet blackout were only effected for around a 24 hour period. Smart engineers were able to reroute Internet traffic to other parts of the countries and the only result was heavy traffic on certain intercontinental cables. This produced slow access for most, putting countries like India at 60% of capacity. In particular, Delhi which is the second largest city in India with 11.5 million people has had an almost complete shutdown. While the reports state the city is at 50% capacity, users at Internet cafes are telling others they’re having no luck getting access. ”We are unable to access any website. Customers are disappointed by this. The Internet is really very slow,” said Sahil, a Net user in Delhi.

At this point in time only four intercontinental cables were cut within a few days period of time. Reports were first released that it was likely ships anchors had cut the cables. On February 3rd, 2008 Egypt’s Ministry of Communications said no ships were present when the two cables were present. “A marine transport committee investigated the traffic of ships in the area, 12 hours before and after the malfunction, where the cables are located to figure out the possibility of being cut by a passing vessel and found out there were no passing ships at that time,” said the statement. More information the Ministry’s report can be found here. If these cables were not cut by ship’s anchors then it’s easy to conclude that someone cut the cables with intent.Worldwide Financial Markets

With a small number of four cables being cut, it was easy for the world’s telecommunications engineers to reroute Internet traffic and recover some access, albeit Iran’s reported consistent blackout. With the world’s business communications and transactions becoming almost dependent on these cables, we need to find alternative solutions to grow the ability to reroute our data whether it be through more redundant Internet sea cables or by satellite. If a clandestine operation were to target these cables in great numbers it could bring the entire world economy to a standstill for weeks. Financial kickbacks could be established easily by shorting the markets and knowing certain sectors would take quite a hit. Hopefully our government is hard at work preparing for a possible attack on our communications that lie outside of our country. Since we all participate in a worldwide economy which has been more apparent with the recent sub-prime crisis, it’s of a serious consequence that we protect others access to the Internet as much as ours. How long will we let the world’s economies hang by an Internet thread?

We want to know what you think about the Internet blackout. Do you think this was planned or just a coincidence that 4 major intercontinental cables were cut within days of each other? Talk back with us through comments or at or form if you want to be on the radio show.

Great article… one pet peeve of mine though,

    AFFECT- verb

    EFFECT- noun

your article seems to hint that the US and israel are doing it…
My thought all along was Iran, and other countries, may be doing it themselves.
    Information is power.
and in those countries, the government/dictator/regime wants to limit the power of information.

    nathan:
    affect:
n : the conscious subjective aspect of feeling or emotion
    | v 1: have an effect upon; “Will the new rules affect me?” [syn: impact,

    effect:

As an attack, this was ineffectual. As a probe, it yields a lot of information about how a “real” event would be handled. One can infer from the response what it would take to make this an effective attack if/when the time comes…..

  7. on 06 Feb 2008 at 11:57 pmMichael

There’s a better way to remember affect/effect instead of hammering something like affect-verb, effect-noun into your brain (which, as someone else illustrated, is not true, those are just the more common, and commonly confused, uses).

When I was a little boy, I learned how to spell my name because A comes before E.
Same here. Affecting something produces an effect; A before E.

Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone cut off the internets and you couldn’t learn that!

    This.

Also, If the companies repairing these breaches have been either penetrated, or can be used by certain covert agencies, this ‘attack’ would be very useful in enabling either installation of NSA splitter (ala AT&T), or remote activated cutting devices.

The primary utility in having preplaced charges on the lines would be to enable information warfare in the future, while no one needs to have explained the utility of TIA access to the cables.

The likelihood that this was intentional sabotage is astronomical, particularly as ship traffic was reported as not present for at least two of the five cable breaks that have now occurred. The list of potential perps is as short as the list of nations with nuclear submarines.

Now, why would Russia want TIA? Go figger!

I’ve got a number of potential, competing theories.

    1) It was the US and/or Israel, either as a probe to determine response effectiveness (and to see how much gov’t infrastructure depended on those public, vulnerable communication methods), or possibly some sort of “sounding shots” in response to the recent hacking of multiple nuclear power facilities (the origins of which have yet to be publicly disclosed). Still, “sounding shots” have typically not been the way that the US has done things.
    2) It was a “false flag” attack perpetrated by Iran or other Islamic/Jihadist/Shari’a supporting movement groups within the region in an attempt to unify the Muslim world under a single banner of persecution. However, the fact that India was drastically impacted compared to these other Arabic states brings doubt to this theory.
    3) It was perpetrated by Russia or China in an attempt to spur on actual shots between Muslim states and the West. Not only will these nations both benefit from war both against the US and waged by those they supply arms to, but the only other significant power in the region - India - was also significantly harmed by this attack.
    4) It was an attempt made by the global socialists/fascists or world bankers to further destabilize the region in the hopes that it would lead to global war and thus, the total collapse of existing national wealth schemes, handing power to the corporations and banks completely. (Ok, this one is a bit over the top. But I’ve yet to see anything -ruling it out-, however unlikely it seems.)

As you can see, there isn’t exactly enough information to pick one of the above, as it stands now. The only likely way we are to find out which was the most likely is pay attention to coming events as they happen - and even then, we may not get the story for years.

Did it occur to anyone that movement of the earth’s crust is to blame for 4 cables all near eachother going out? This has happened before in Taiwan, shutting off internet access for weeks.

If you want to get all conspiracy theorist though, I think uzir was on the right track, but more likely, the backup routers are the ones compromised, so the NSA or whoever is getting a free watch over all the traffic. And following his idea, maybe now they are splicing into the “down” lines?

    Hi Folks!

Just wanted to share my new experience.

If your Windows XP denies to run due to an error related to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other important system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Just boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then launch “attrib -H -R -S” on the C:\Boot.ini file and remove it. Launch “Bootcfg /Rebuild” and then Fixboot

    Cheers,
    Carl

    Hello Everybody

    That’s me again.

This time we will learn how to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and restore often startup issues in Windows Vista.

    INTRODUCTION

You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to troubleshoot and fix the following items in Windows Vista:
    -Master boot record (MBR)
    -Boot sector
    -Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store

Note: When you are troubleshooting startup mistakes by using the Windows RE, you should first try the Startup Repair option in the System Recovery Options dialog window.
If the Startup Repair option does not repair the error, or if you must troubleshoot more steps by hand, use the Bootrec.exe tool.

    MORE INFORMATION

To run the Bootrec.exe utility, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:
1.Put the Windows Vista setup disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2.Press a key when you are prompted.
3.Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
    4.Click Repair your computer.
5.Hit the OS that you want to restore, and then click Next.
6.In the System Recovery Options dialog window, click Command Prompt.
7.Type Bootrec.exe, and then hit ENTER.

Good luck with your Windows Vista, since with this OS your still need it.

    Cheers,
    Carl

    Hello Everybody

Windows vista is also causing lots of boot problems, so I often get questions like this:

I have a Dell Dimension, which won’t boot to Windows (Vista), and none the repair options work:

Startup repair: Reports fix fail due to problem with registry

System Restore: Reports no restore points available

Windows Complete PC Restore: Reports no backups available

Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool: No memory problems

    Command Prompt.
Can’t think of any appropriate command to use here.

So I booted with the system DVD (as one would with XP) but the upgrade
option has been greyed don’t want to do a clean setup. I want to fix existing
    installation.

    What should I do?

    ————————————————————

    So here is the answer:

You can’t do a ‘repair install’ because you need to launch the Vista DVD
from within Windows, not, as you have been doing, booting straight from the
DVD; that is why the ‘upgrade’ is greyed out.

If you cannot launch Vista and none of the repair options will work a clean
install is the only other option.

To save problems in future it is actually a good idea to image the hard
drive, using program like True Image. What I do is install operating system, download all updates, check system I working okay for a day or two, activate system, then create image of the whole drive/partition. Any time I get a problem I can re-image the drive/partition quickly and be up and running without much trouble. And minor fixes are done by using any registry repair tool, there are plenty of them on the market today.

I have to state this is for Intel based systems only (mainly laptops) and you would be well advised to image your disk BEFORE YOU TRY THIS just in case something happens and you cannot boot your system (IMAGE, IMAGE, IMAGE!!!)

Once you have your disk images precede with the following:

Backup your registry or make a restore point just in case.

    Under search: regedit
    Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\

    Locate: folder “iaStor”
Under “iaStor” you will find a folder named “Parameter” > delete this folder

    Locate: folder “iaStorv”
Under “iaStorv” you will find a folder named “Parameter” > delete this folder

    Reload Vista

    There was this guy see.
He wasn’t very bright and he reached his adult life without ever having learned “the facts”.
Somehow, it gets to be his wedding day.
While he is walking down the isle, his father tugs his sleeve and says,

“Son, when you get to the hotel room…Call me”

Hours later he gets to the hotel room with his beautiful blushing bride and he calls his father,

“Dad, we are the hotel, what do I do?”

“O.K. Son, listen up, take off your clothes and get in the bed, then she should take off her clothes and get in the bed, if not help her. Then either way, ah, call me”

    A few moments later…

“Dad we took off our clothes and we are in the bed, what do I do?”

O.K. Son, listen up. Move real close to her and she should move real close to you, and then… Ah, call me.”

    A few moments later…

“DAD! WE TOOK OFF OUR CLOTHES, GOT IN THE BED AND MOVED REAL CLOSE, WHAT DO I DO???”

“O.K. Son, Listen up, this is the most important part. Stick the long part of your body into the place where she goes to the bathroom.”

    A few moments later…
