The war on drugs continues to carry on day after day and it’s not surprising to hear about a drug bust on the highways, a meth lab raid or even high school kids dealing at school. What if there was a drug that when confiscated, was something that every human has readily available. It’s not under your kitchen sink, it’s not in your tool shed and it’s not even in your garage. This new drug of choice can be found about once a day with the average individual. Human feces and urine is what is behind a suspected new way to get high for high school kids.
A memo was leaked to the public from the Collier County Sheriff’s office that details the use of the drug. If you are so inclined you can read this in depth memo here. The alert all started around September 19th, 2007 when a concerned parent contacted a sheriff at the Collier county department. The parent told the sheriff her teenager had learned about the new way to get high at school in conversations with friends. The secret discussion going on in the hallways mentioned the term “Jenkem.” Reports from other countries about the use of this method to get hallucinations and euphoric feelings have been released over the years. This is the first time credible evidence this method could be being used in the United States.
The released memo says the experience that users feel from using the methods compare to using cocaine but has other effects like hallucinations and episodes of talking to people that are not there. The leaked memo also states negative side effects seem to be the lingering taste of sewage in the abusers mouth for as long as days.
The origination of the drug is mentioned in this memo to be from Africa and other 3rd world countries. The assumptions are not confirmed but past releases of information of abuse on this drug point in that direction. After a tv news station, WINK News, released a nightly news report on their local broadcast reports of this creative drug have shot across the Internet on sites like The Drudge Report, The Washington Post, Inside Edition and The Smoking Gun. A YouTube release of the WINK News report can be found here.
High School students were interviewed for the nightly newscast and asked what they thought about the drug. Obviously in front of a live audience every student gave the same answer, “Gross!” What is yet to be confirmed are specific cases of individuals being caught using the methods listed in the released memo. Currently the DEA is referring all cases to the Collier County Sherrif’s Office.
If it wasn’t already obvious, Collier County Sherrif’s Office deputies claim that right now Jenkem is not illegal. If the authorities were to ban the substance, it’s easy to question what it would be that users might be charged with. Crap sniffing? If you need a label to give this new oddity of High school adventurists the leaked memo lists the following names for the new drug: Winnie, Shit, Runners, Fruit from Crack Pipe, Leroy Jenkems, Might, Butthash, and Waste.
A common term used for a product produced by marijuana is hash. As much as you don’t want to believe the reality of High School after school activities, you may have to keep your eye out for Butthash in your teenagers bedroom. If you see a bottle with brown liquid, a balloon on top and your kid has been acting funny take action!
BUSINESS SHRINK REACTION:
Hello this is the Business Shrink weighing again for more comments on the creative new drug called Jenkem. Let’s realize that we need to call a spade a spade, I and although this may be a bit off color, think the term “fartsniffing” has been around a long time. It just seems that this new drug gives new meaning and new verb to an old thought and an old concept.
You know they always say, there’s nothing new out there just new combinations of new and orginal things. I think people really need to understand that people have been doing this in informal ways with their own bodily fluids and discharge for their whole lives, so perhaps the real issue is that there could be too much concentration and or it may involve 3rd parties.
Again, query is this criminal, or is this stupid, or is this natural, or is this a much better way to get high than taking cocaine or some of the other drugs that can kill you. We need the doctors to weigh in and we also need people to be honest about the fact that this is not really a new concept, it is just crossing the line and talking about something that has been taboo.
Many of you have heard of the dutch oven, that’s another concept where people pass wind underneath a blanket and preserve the intense aroma and can get a high. What’s really new here other than the fact that the unspoken is being spoken about and that people are constantly looking to challenge conventional wisdom and the norms.
It would be good to hear from people just like the mortuary undertaker business and embalming, a lot of these gases that are spoken about are there as a natural byproduct as well. Perhaps we could hear from people in that huge industry where of course things have been going on for years and some of this stuff may be a natural byproduct and a perk from the job. What other jobs and hospitals and other medical places are similar can produce the same effect.
Again, we need to look at things upside down, sideways, shaken around and look at it as a Rubic cube and understand what’s really going on and whether it’s the shock value of the taboo as opposed to the merits and demerits of the situation.
Obviously this is a repulsive subject that nobody would like to talk about, clearly proves the point that truth is stranger than fiction. What comes to mind of course is the old saying when I was growing up that everyone when privately polled will admit that they like the smell of their own bodily fluids and emissions but they don’t like the smell from other people. In this case, it’s possible that this “drug” could be totally organic and hollistic and could relate to the particular person and could be designed from the person for himself or herself, who wants to get “high.”
Once we get into the notion of people indulging in their own bodily fluids and materials we really move away from crimes with victims and we get into a situation of what is good taste, what is bad taste, what is healthy, what is self destructive, what is manageable.
I think we need some scientific opinion as to whether there is something that is dangerous to a great extent such as germs or other aspects of congitive disrepair that could come from indulging in the equivalent of smelling of your own odors and possibly ingesting some of your own fluids. It’s easy to imagine why society would rally around and find this disgusting when a lot of our country tries to get in our bedrooms and legislate our morality, where again there are no crimes.
I would certainly want medical experts to weight in on this. Without making a pun, this reminds me of a green high, green as in environmentally holistic. There is no pun intended in the notion that when you obviously mix yellow and brown you get green.
But I do think this relates to a larger societal issue of where does the government have the right to legislate good taste and bad taste. Where does the government get the right to serve as a parent, the scolding parent, or where otherwise no one else is doing the job. Or where does someone have the right to be disgusting or to do something racy that may effect themselves somewhat but isn’t fatal? This is similar to: Does the government have the right to stick scotch tape over someones mouth to keep them from becoming obese?
So we need a lot more questions than answers here, but my first blush is, truth is stranger than fiction and we need to understand what the impact of this is and if there are different practices that are obnoxious and unlawful and harmful that persay, should be curtailed, but where their may be related practices that are manageable, tolerable even though they may be disgusting.
Other issues that are raised are do we want to make illegal something that is disgusting but relatively less harmful as opposed to something that may not be digusting, but could be lethal like cocaine. These are a bunch of issues that are swirling around that need to be addressed, not only in terms of a person’s right to do something to himself or herself but where the state jumps in and says no you can’t do it. Even when somebody else, a 3rd party may not be harmed. I would be interested in people weighing in with their feelings on this complex interesting and very bizarre subject.
