We’ve all experienced the relentless annoying things that go on in the workplace.
Here are some of most annoying we found:
Sometimes it’s as simple as just trying to get office supplies from the gatekeeper. A likely account is a dreadful story that was run in the WSJ a few weeks ago. As the story told the office supply gatekeeper kept a detailed log with dates and supply amounts of office items such as paper-clips, pencils, pens and staplers. It may almost seem silly that some people have to fight for office supplies but office politics can go to crazy levels. If you’re trading in old pencil stubs in exchange for new pencils of if you have to experience an office supply gatekeeper on a day to day basis we’d love to hear from you over here.
Gatekeepers in the office can be as simple as that supply clerk lurking behind the supply closet door. If you don’t pay enough respect or give that daily acknowledgement, you could easily be begging for the simplest of all office supplies. Sound familiar?
It’s not always tangible things that you may need but sometimes you need simple answers quickly. It’s at these times that gatekeepers of highly sought after information or reports will make you wait your turn while they pretend to be extremely busy and hard pressed for time. As soon as their flurry ends, they provide you a long sigh and a few eyebrow and facial twitches to be sure you understand your request is very inconvenient. After a nudge of possibility the feet dragging continues before a sudden jolt of divine intervention seems to clear the pathway.
In most walks of life we all expect some trouble or hard nose ruling to come from the big bosses running the show but it can be a completely unexpected nightmare when it comes from where you least expect it. Productivity can be steered to a hault from the littlest of the little guys if they don’t feel they’ve been respected. It just goes to show that friends in low places never seem to be a bad strategy.
The best leaders of a corporation or workplace are often the people that understand all of the subtle power circles that hide in every corner. These people can weave in and out of the roadblocks thrown up by people that seem to make it difficult for everyone just by treating the right people with respect or acknowledging their influence. As simple as it looks sometimes, one wrong move can land you begging to get what you need to get your job done.
It’s not always asking for what you need but making it known that you have a differing opinion. Many employees experience a backlash if they disagree with someone who feels their job duties have been taken away. Job duties can be taken away from angry revenger’s simply by consulting with the higher ups when a disagreement is hard to resolve. As quick as you had civility the employee you might have had to work around can be finding ways to send revenge your way by rejecting travel expenses, losing receipts, scrutinizing payroll or even forgetting to tell you lunch was at the office an hour ago.
